The Johnny Lightning Special, named after a popular toy car, represented the fullest development of turbo Ford power. In 1970, the Johnny Lightning Special, with Al Unser driving, won not only the Indy 500, but the national championships. The Vel Miletich/Parneli Jones team modified the 1971 car only slightly to create a larger monocoque chassis; it was the first car to accommodate the entire allowable 75-gallon fuel load within the monocoque. This car won four of the first five races in 1971, including the Indy 500.
