The Scuderia Colonia was founded on January 13, 1960 in the Villa Palais du Rhin in Cologne, which has been used by the ADAC as a club and event house since 1956 . In addition to 21 other sports and racing drivers, the founders were primarily the lignite entrepreneur Friedrich Victor Rolff, who was also a successful racing driver, and the Formula 1 racing driver Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips.

Scuderia Colonia drivers took part in numerous car races. Drivers were also registered as a team for the Grand Prix races for the Formula 1 World Championship in 1961 . Michael May and Wolfgang Seidel were most recently registered in Lotus 18 racing cars for the tragic Grand Prix of Italy on September 10, 1961 on the Monza circuit , for which Seidel was able to qualify, but was eliminated on the first lap with engine failure. The leading in the world championship "Taffy" von Trips started as a works driver for Scuderia Ferrari - but as usual with the coat of arms of his Scuderia Coloniaon the helmet - and was killed in a devastating accident on the second lap of the race. 15 spectators died with him and 60 others were injured, some seriously.
