WALKER RACING - REYNARD 95I - CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI - 1995 INDYCAR SEASON - Mug
Christian had decided to leave F1, where he raced between 1992 and 1994, to cross the Atlantic towards the United States, where he would build his entire career on the track from then on. Instead of racing for teams that, with a lot of effort, pinched points, such as Footwork and Minardi, Fittipaldi gained a chance to race for Walker Racing, with Robby Gordon as his teammate.
Interestingly, Penske, Emerson's team, had an unrecognizable performance and was eliminated on Bump Day. Indianapolis watched with astonishment the elimination of both Emerson Fittipaldi and Al Unser Jr., the last two winners of the Indy 500 at the time.
But Christian tried to represent the clan. It wasn't an easy journey for Wilsinho Fittipaldi's son, who managed to secure a spot on the coveted 33-car grid to start in 27th place. In the first corner right after the start, a big scare: the very serious accident suffered by Stan Fox just ahead.
Fittipaldi overcame his lack of experience on long ovals — previously, the then Walker driver had raced on short ovals in Phoenix and Nazareth — and managed to run a clean race amidst the unpredictability that guides a race like the Indy 500. In the end , Wilsinho's son crossed the brick strip after 200 laps in second place, just behind Jacques Villeneuve, winner with Green.
