Fabi's career is very interesting because in the beginning he divided his attention between F1 and CART. Started in F1 for the small team Toleman in 1982 without success. He moved to CART the following year and made history by winning 4 races for the title against veteran Al Unser. The American wins the championship by a difference of 5 points. Fabi wins the rookie of the year title.
In 1984 he races for the Forsythe team in CART and for Brabham in F1.

For 1985 he is recalled by Toleman which had already been acquired by the Benetton group and stays until the end of 1987. In that period the Benetton team had one of the fastest cars on the grid. Teo Fabi and Gerhard Berger achieved fantastic results mainly in the rankings thanks to the powerful BMW engine that generated up to 1,400 bhp (1,044 kW; 1,419 PS). But the car was fragile and often broke down during races. Teo Fabi returned to CART in 1988 and competed there until 1996.
