Even winning 1 point in the 1989 season, the situation was not good for the French team. The team failed to pre-qualify for the last 9 races of the year. Driver duo Gabriele Tarquini and Yannick Dalmas were retained, and a new car was designed, the JH25.

AGS started the year without sponsors, and the car's development was not ideal. Before the middle of the season the team closes a sponsorship deal with Ted Lapidus (French fashion designer).

However, the results were not as expected. The best result was Dalmas' 9th place in the Spanish GP.
