After the apathetic 1983 season in Formula 1 for the Tyrrell team, Danny Sullivan returns to the US the following year for Indycar. In 1984 he wins 3 races for Shierson Racing and attracted the attention of several teams.

In 1985, he moved to Penske Racing, winning the 1985 Indianapolis 500. His victory at Indy, known in auto racing lore as the "spin and win" is one of the most legendary moments in Indy 500 history.

The Penske Team used the excellent March 85C chassis and Cosworth engines, which ensured the Indycar title for teammate Al Unser.
